Instagram Insights Explained: Every Metric, Where to Find It, and What to Do With It (2026)

A plain map of Instagram Insights in 2026: where it lives, what every metric means now that views replaced impressions, and the few numbers worth checking each week.

Instagram Insights is the free analytics built into Instagram for professional accounts (Business or Creator). It shows how many accounts saw your content (reach), how many times it was shown or played (views), who interacted, how many people visited your profile or tapped your link, how you gained or lost followers, and who your audience is. On the phone you open it from the Professional dashboard on your profile. On desktop you use Meta Business Suite. Personal accounts don't get it.

By the end of this guide you'll know where every number lives, what each one means in 2026, and which 8 of them to check in a 15 minute weekly routine.

What Instagram Insights is and who gets it

Insights is Instagram's own reporting layer. It covers three things: your content (every post, carousel, Reel and Story), your account as a whole (totals over a date range), and your audience (age, gender, locations, active times).

Two rules decide whether you see it:

  • You need a professional account. Meta's developer docs say it plainly: insights data exists only for media owned by Instagram professional accounts, not personal ones. Business and Creator accounts both qualify.
  • Only content posted after you switch is measured. Posts from your personal-account days won't have insights.

Instagram is worth measuring properly: 50% of US adults use it, according to Pew Research's 2025 survey. For a local business, that's a big share of your customers.

How to turn on Instagram Insights

Switching is free, takes about 2 minutes and doesn't delete anything.

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
  2. Tap the menu (three lines, top right) and open Settings and activity.
  3. Tap Account type and tools, then Switch to professional account.
  4. Pick a category that describes you (for example "Coffee shop" or "Marketing agency").
  5. Choose Business if you're a company, a shop or an agency client. Choose Creator if you're a person building an audience.
  6. Tap Done. A Professional dashboard button now appears under your bio.

Most small businesses should pick Business. It adds contact buttons (call, email, directions) and those taps show up in Insights, which is useful data for a cafe or a salon.

Where to find Instagram Insights on your phone

There are three places to look, from broad to specific.

Professional dashboard

Tap Professional dashboard under your bio. The top block summarizes the last 30 days: views, interactions, new followers and content shared. Tap any of those numbers to open the full account insights. The dashboard also holds tools (ads, branded content, monetization), but for analytics you only need the insights block.

Account insights

From the dashboard, tap a metric to open account insights. At the top is a date picker with preset ranges (the last 7, 14, 30 and 90 days in the current app, plus custom ranges). Below that you get tabs or sections for Views, Interactions, Followers and your Audience. Each section breaks the total down by content type (posts, Reels, Stories) and by followers versus non-followers.

Insights for one post, Reel or Story

  • Post or carousel: open it and tap View insights under the image.
  • Reel: open it and tap View insights (or the three dots, then Insights, on some versions).
  • Story: open your active Story or find it in your Archive, swipe up, and tap the chart icon.

Per-post insights are where the real lessons are. The account total tells you if the week was good. The post screen tells you why.

How to see Instagram Insights on desktop

The reliable desktop route is Meta Business Suite:

  1. Go to business.facebook.com and log in with the Facebook account linked to your Instagram.
  2. Pick your business portfolio if you have more than one.
  3. Click Insights in the left menu.
  4. Use the Instagram toggle or filter to see your Instagram numbers, and switch between Overview, Results, Audience and Content.

This works only if your Instagram account is connected to a Facebook Page in the same business portfolio. The Content view is the most useful on a big screen: a sortable table of every post with views, reach and interactions side by side.

Instagram's own website also shows some insights for professional accounts when you open a post, but it is thinner than the app. For a real review or a client report, use the app or Business Suite.

What changed: impressions and plays became views

If you learned Instagram analytics before 2024, some names are gone.

In 2024 Instagram made views the headline metric across Reels, posts and Stories, replacing impressions for photos and plays for Reels. The API followed: Meta's Graph API version 22.0 changelog introduced views for media and account insights and deprecated impressions, plays, clips_replays_count and ig_reels_aggregated_all_plays_count, with the old metrics shut off for all API versions on April 21, 2025. Impressions return an error for any media created on or after July 2, 2024.

So "Instagram reach vs impressions" is now "reach vs views". Reach counts unique accounts. Views counts every time the content was shown or played, repeats included. A Reel with 1,000 reach and 1,600 views was watched about 1.6 times per person.

Every Instagram Insights metric explained

Here's every metric you'll meet, with a one-line definition and the question it answers. Definitions follow Meta's media insights reference and account insights reference; the app uses the same numbers with friendlier labels.

Reach and views

  • Views: the number of times your content was played or displayed. Answers: how much attention did this get in total?
  • Reach (accounts reached): unique accounts that saw your content at least once. Meta flags it as an estimated metric. Answers: how many different people did I get in front of?
  • Followers vs non-followers: the split of views and reach. Answers: am I reaching new people or only my regulars?
  • Traffic sources (post level): where views came from, such as Home feed, Profile, Explore, Reels tab, hashtags and "Other". Answers: which surface is distributing this post?

Engagement metrics

  • Interactions: likes, comments, saves, shares and reposts combined, minus unlikes and deleted comments. Answers: did people do anything?
  • Accounts engaged: unique accounts that interacted. Answers: how many people cared, not how many clicks one fan made?
  • Likes and comments: the obvious ones. Comments carry more weight than likes because they take effort.
  • Saves: how many times people bookmarked the post. Answers: is this useful enough to come back to? Saves are the best signal for tips, menus and how-to carousels.
  • Shares and sends: shares count reshares to Stories and sends in DMs. Answers: would someone put their name behind this? For discovery, sends are the strongest signal you can see.
  • Reposts: how many people reposted your post to their followers (the newer repost feature, counted separately from shares).

Profile and follower metrics

  • Profile visits: how many times people opened your profile, overall and from a specific post. Answers: did this post make people curious about you?
  • External link taps (bio link taps): taps on the link in your bio. Answers: did Instagram send anyone to my website or booking page?
  • Business address, call, email and text taps: taps on your contact buttons (Business accounts). Answers: did anyone try to visit, call or message?
  • Follows and unfollows: new followers, lost followers and the net change. Answers: is the audience growing, and which posts brought people in (look for "follows" on each post)?

Reels metrics

  • Watch time: the total time people spent playing the Reel, replays included.
  • Average watch time: watch time divided by views. Answers: how long does a typical viewer stay? Compare it to the Reel's length. A 20 second Reel with a 6 second average lost most people early.
  • Skip rate: the share of views where people swiped away in the first 3 seconds (rolling out; you may not see it yet). Answers: did the hook work?
  • Replays: no longer a separate headline number since 2025; they are folded into views and watch time.
  • Likes by moment: newer builds show where in the Reel people liked it. Answers: which second landed?

Stories metrics

Check a Story's numbers while it's live or soon after: the API only serves Story insights for 24 hours, and Meta hides Story metrics when fewer than 5 people viewed it.

  • Forward: taps to skip to your next Story frame. A few are normal.
  • Back: taps to rewatch the previous frame. A good sign: someone wanted to see it again.
  • Next story: swipes to the next account's Story. This is people leaving you.
  • Exited: taps to close Stories entirely.
  • Replies, sticker taps and link taps: direct responses. Link taps on a Story are your best measure of Story-driven traffic.

Audience metrics

  • Age and gender: of followers, or of accounts reached or engaged.
  • Top locations: top cities and countries.
  • Most active times: the hours and days your followers are on Instagram.

Two limits: audience breakdowns and follows data need at least 100 followers, and demographics only list the top 45 entries (for example, the top 45 cities).

Content by format

Account insights split views and interactions by format: posts (photos and carousels), Reels and Stories. This is where you learn that, say, carousels bring saves while Reels bring reach. If you post carousels, the per-slide like data tells you which slide did the work; see our guide to Instagram carousels for how to structure them.

How far back data goes and how long it takes to appear

  • Delay: Meta's docs say metric data can be delayed up to 48 hours. Early numbers show within minutes, but don't judge a post before day 2.
  • History in the app: preset ranges go back 90 days; recent app versions also offer custom ranges for older account totals.
  • History through the API: account and media metrics are stored for up to 2 years, which is why third-party tools can show older data than the app's presets.
  • Active times: only the last 30 days.
  • Time zone: Insights uses your phone's or account's local time. If you manage a client in another time zone, convert before you pick posting hours.
  • Export: the app has no export button. Business Suite lets you export some insights as a CSV; otherwise you screenshot or use a tool built on the API.

The 8 metrics a small business should check every week

You don't need 30 numbers. For a cafe, a salon, a gym or a local shop, these 8 cover it:

  1. Views (7 days, versus the previous 7 days): is attention going up?
  2. Reach, split by non-followers: are new locals finding you?
  3. Accounts engaged: how many people cared.
  4. Saves plus shares on your top 3 posts: which content is useful or worth passing on.
  5. Profile visits: curiosity about the business.
  6. External link taps and contact button taps: the closest Instagram gets to a sale (bookings, calls, directions).
  7. Net follows: growth minus losses, and which post drove most follows.
  8. Most active times: to confirm your posting hours still match your audience.

Everything else is for diagnosing a specific post. Our broader guide to social media analytics covers how to set targets across networks.

The 4 metrics an agency puts in a client report

Clients don't read dashboards. They read 4 numbers and one sentence of explanation. For Instagram, use:

MetricWhy the client caresSample report line

Reach

How many people saw the brand

"Reach 14,200, up 18% on September"

Engagement rate (interactions / reach)

Whether content resonates

"Engagement rate 4.1%, steady"

Net follows

"Net follows +236, top driver: menu carousel"

Link and contact taps

"212 link taps, 41 direction taps"

Keep the definitions identical month to month, and write one decision under the numbers ("we're doubling carousels in October"). Our social media report template has the full layout.

A 15 minute weekly Instagram Insights routine

Do this every Monday morning, for the previous Monday to Sunday.

  1. Minutes 0 to 3: open the Professional dashboard, set the range to the last 7 days, and write down views, reach, accounts engaged and net follows next to last week's numbers.
  2. Minutes 3 to 6: open Content you shared, sort by views, and note your top 3 and bottom 2 posts.
  3. Minutes 6 to 9: open the top post. Record its saves, shares, profile visits, follows and main traffic source. Ask what's different about it: format, topic, hook, time.
  4. Minutes 9 to 11: open the bottom post and check reach from non-followers and, for Reels, average watch time. Decide whether the topic or the execution failed.
  5. Minutes 11 to 13: check link taps and contact taps. Match any spike to a post.
  6. Minutes 13 to 15: write 1 decision for next week (more of X, less of Y, move Z to a different hour) and put it in your plan.

One decision a week beats ten observations. Store the numbers in a simple sheet so you have a trend after a month.

Example: reading a cafe's week

Here's a filled example for a neighborhood cafe with 3,100 followers, posting 4 times in the week of September 14 to 20, 2026.

Account totals for the week: 17,400 views (up from 11,900), 10,300 accounts reached, 61% of them non-followers, 612 accounts engaged, 48 net follows, 96 external link taps and 37 direction taps. Most active times: 7 to 9 am and 12 to 1 pm on weekdays.

The reading:

  • The Reel got the most reach and shares, and 71% of its views came from non-followers. It's the discovery engine, but its 4.9 second average watch time on a 14 second clip means the second half is dead weight.
  • The menu carousel got 8 times more saves than the Reel and drove the most follows. People saved it to decide what to order.
  • The "Weekend hours" photo reached mostly existing followers and did nothing. That information belongs in a Story or a highlight.
  • Link taps jumped on Thursday, the day the carousel went up at 7:30 am.

That's the whole point of Insights: numbers in, one plan out.

Instagram Insights not showing: common problems and fixes

You have a personal account. No professional account, no Insights. Switch (steps above). Old posts stay without data.

Insights show zeros or "Not enough data". Common causes: the post is less than 48 hours old, the account has under 100 followers (follows and audience data stay hidden), or a Story had fewer than 5 viewers. Wait, or widen the date range.

The "View insights" button is missing on a post. The post was published before you switched to professional, or it's a post you were tagged in, or a collaboration post owned by the other account. Only the owner sees insights for a post.

Numbers in Business Suite don't match the app. Normal. Business Suite can include boosted and ad views in some totals, uses the time zone of the business portfolio, and refreshes on a different schedule. Pick one source for reporting and stick to it.

Audience section is empty. You need 100 followers for follower demographics and 100 engagements in the range for engaged audience demographics.

Numbers dropped overnight. Reach is estimated and Meta recalculates it. Small corrections in the first 48 hours are normal. A 40% drop over 2 weeks is a content or frequency problem, not a bug.

You can't see who viewed your profile. Insights never names profile visitors. Apps that promise this are a security risk; don't give them your password.

How an AI planner uses Instagram Insights

A human can run the 15 minute routine for one account. For 10 clients it becomes 2.5 hours every Monday, and that's the part that slips first. An AI planner reads the same numbers through the Instagram API and turns them into next week's plan:

  • Formats: it compares saves, shares and follows by format and gives more slots to the format that works for that account (carousels for the cafe, Reels for a gym).
  • Topics: it groups posts by topic and hook, and keeps the ones with high saves and shares.
  • Times: it uses the most active times and the actual performance by hour to schedule, rather than generic best times to post.
  • Guardrails: it waits for the 48 hour delay before scoring a post and ignores thin samples.

This is how SocialScheduler works: each Sunday it plans the client's week from these results and from top posts in the niche (it learns from them, never copies), writes the posts in the client's voice, designs the images, carousels and short videos, and publishes at the hours the audience is online. On Monday it sends a report under the agency's name. If you only need the publishing side, the Instagram scheduler handles posts, carousels and Reels (Stories aren't scheduled).

Whatever tool you use, the habit matters more than the software. Pick the 8 metrics, run the routine every Monday for a month, and write one decision each week. By week 4 you'll know which formats, topics and hours work for your account, and your plan will stop being a guess.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check Instagram Insights?

Switch to a professional account, then tap Professional dashboard under your bio for account totals, or tap View insights under any post or Reel for that post's numbers. On desktop, open Insights in Meta Business Suite.

Can I see Instagram Insights on desktop?

Yes, through Meta Business Suite at business.facebook.com, as long as your Instagram account is connected to a Facebook Page in your business portfolio. Instagram's website shows only limited post insights.

What is the difference between reach and views on Instagram?

Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw your content. Views counts every time it was shown or played, including repeat views by the same person, so views is always equal to or higher than reach.

What happened to impressions on Instagram?

Instagram replaced impressions (and Reels plays) with views in 2024. In the API, impressions were deprecated in version 22.0 and switched off for all versions on April 21, 2025, and they return an error for media created on or after July 2, 2024.

Can Instagram Insights show who viewed my profile?

No. Insights shows how many profile visits you got and which posts drove them, but never the names of visitors. Stories are the exception: you can see the list of accounts that viewed an active Story.

Why is my Instagram Insights not showing?

The most common reasons are a personal account, a post published before you switched to professional, fewer than 100 followers (for audience and follows data), or a post under 48 hours old. Updating the app also fixes missing buttons.

How long does Instagram keep insights data?

The app's presets cover up to 90 days, with custom ranges for older account totals. Through the Instagram API, metrics are stored for up to 2 years, while the most active times data only covers the last 30 days.

How often does Instagram Insights update?

Numbers start appearing within minutes, but Meta says the underlying data can be delayed up to 48 hours. Judge a post after 2 days and compare full weeks, not single days.
