How to use it

  1. 1Describe the post or paste the caption: the product, the subject, the place, the detail that makes it yours.
  2. 2Pick the platform and the language, then generate up to 20 hashtags.
  3. 3Click the hashtags you want to copy them, and keep only as many as the platform rewards: 5 or fewer on Instagram and TikTok, 3 or fewer on LinkedIn, 1 or none on X.

What this hashtag generator does, and what it does not

You describe the post in plain words and a language model returns up to 20 hashtags, sorted into three sizes: about eight broad tags, eight mid-size niche tags and four very specific ones. You can target one of nine networks or leave it on all platforms, and get the tags in one of ten languages. Click a tag to copy it.

It does not read live post counts, trending charts or a banned-hashtag list. The suggestions are relevant to the topic, not measured. Before you post, search a tag in the app to see how busy it is and whether its recent posts are visible. It also gives you 20 on purpose, so you have room to choose. No network in 2026 rewards 20 hashtags on one post.

How many hashtags to use on each platform in 2026

Two networks now enforce a hard cap, and the rest reward restraint. These are the numbers as of September 2026, with the source of each rule.

  • Instagram: 5 per post or Reel, enforced since December 2025 (announced by @creators; Social Media Today, 2025-12-18). The old limit was 30
  • TikTok: 5 per video, with a 'Maximum 5 hashtags' warning since August 2025 (MediaPost, 2025-08-21). 3 to 5 precise tags, plus keywords in the caption
  • LinkedIn: no hard cap, but 3 or fewer look natural. LinkedIn removed hashtag following, so tags work as labels, not a feed
  • X: X's help center recommends no more than 2 per post. One tag, or none, reads best
  • Threads: 1 topic tag per post, no # sign needed (Instagram Help Center)
  • Pinterest: 2 to 5 at most. Keywords in the pin title, description and board name matter far more
  • YouTube: the first 3 show above the title; more than 60 and YouTube ignores all of them
  • Facebook and Bluesky: 1 to 3, or none. Neither network relies on hashtags for reach

Broad, niche and specific hashtags

Hashtag size is the number of posts already using it. Broad tags such as #coffee sit on millions of posts, so a new post drops out of view in minutes. Niche tags, roughly 10,000 to 500,000 posts, reach people who follow a subject closely. Specific tags, such as a place, a product or your brand, are small but they are where your own audience looks.

With a five-tag cap, the mix matters more than the count. A good set for most accounts is one broad tag that names the category, two or three niche tags that describe the post, and one or two specific tags for the product, the location or the brand. That is why the generator returns all three sizes instead of twenty popular tags. Relevance beats volume: every tag should describe what is actually in the post.

Example: a hashtag set for a coffee roaster

The fictional roaster Acme Coffee is posting a new Ethiopia Guji light roast with blueberry notes. A 20-tag set in three sizes looks like the first three lines below. The rest shows what to keep for each platform.

  • Broad (8): #coffee #coffeetime #coffeelover #specialtycoffee #lightroast #pourover #coffeebeans #morningcoffee
  • Niche (8): #ethiopiancoffee #singleorigincoffee #thirdwavecoffee #homebrewing #v60 #freshroastedcoffee #coffeeroaster #filtercoffee
  • Specific (4): #guji #ethiopiaguji #acmecoffee #acmecoffeeroasters
  • Instagram, keep 5: #specialtycoffee #ethiopiancoffee #pourover #ethiopiaguji #acmecoffee
  • TikTok, keep 4: #lightroast #pourover #ethiopiancoffee #acmecoffee
  • LinkedIn, keep 2: #specialtycoffee #coffeeroaster
  • X, keep 1 or none: #specialtycoffee
  • Threads, one topic tag: Specialty coffee
  • Pinterest, keep 3: #pourover #ethiopiancoffee #lightroast, with 'light roast Ethiopian coffee' in the pin title
  • YouTube, keep 3: #pourover #lightroast #acmecoffee

Caption or first comment: where to put hashtags

On Instagram, hashtags in the caption and in the first comment are treated the same way, and the five-tag cap applies to the post as a whole, so the first comment no longer buys extra room. Most guides now recommend the end of the caption, after a line break, because the tags are there from the moment the post goes live. The first comment only keeps a long caption tidy.

On TikTok, put hashtags in the caption and write the main keyword into the caption text itself, since TikTok search reads both. On LinkedIn, place two or three at the end of the post. On X, work one tag into the sentence if it adds meaning. On YouTube, add them to the description; the first three appear above the title.

Banned and shadow-flagged hashtags

Instagram restricts some hashtags that attract spam or content that breaks its rules. It does not publish a list, and tags move on and off it without notice. A banned tag shows no results. A flagged one opens but shows a message that recent posts are hidden, or only shows old posts. Using one can reduce the reach of the whole post, not just that tag.

The check takes a minute: search each tag in the app before you use it for the first time, and drop any tag whose recent posts are hidden or weeks old. Avoid generic engagement tags such as #reels, #explore, #likeforlike and #followforfollow; Instagram names the first two as tags to skip. Do not paste the same block of tags on every post, because repeated identical sets look automated.

FAQ

Questions about this tool.

Something else? Write to us
Is this hashtag generator free?

Yes. There is no account, no login and no credit card. A fair-use cap of 20 runs per 10 minutes, shared with the caption and bio generators, stops scripts, not people.

How many hashtags can you use on Instagram in 2026?

Five per post or Reel. Instagram cut the limit from 30 to 5 in December 2025 to reduce spam, and asks for fewer, more targeted tags.

How many hashtags should I use on TikTok?

Three to five. TikTok has shown a maximum of 5 hashtags per video since August 2025, and keywords in the caption text help search as much as the tags do.

Do hashtags still work on Instagram?

They help Instagram understand what a post is about and let people who search or follow a topic find it. They are not a reach lever on their own; the post itself earns the reach.

Should hashtags go in the caption or the first comment?

The caption, at the end. Both places are treated the same, the five-tag cap covers the whole post, and caption tags are present the moment it publishes.

Do hashtags work on LinkedIn?

A little. They label the post's topic, but LinkedIn removed hashtag following, so use two or three at most and put the effort into the first line.

Should I use hashtags on X?

Sparingly. X recommends no more than two per post, and one relevant tag or none usually reads better.

How do I know if a hashtag is banned?

Search it in Instagram. If there are no results, or the page says recent posts are hidden, do not use it. The generator does not check this for you.

Are these hashtags trending right now?

They are relevant to your topic and mixed by size, but the tool does not read live volume or trend data. Check a time-sensitive tag in the app before you use it.

Can I save hashtag sets for each client?

Not in the free tool. In SocialScheduler each client's brief holds their hashtags, and the agent places the right number for each network when it writes the post.
